Telangana: About 73 percent of students study in English medium schools

Hyderabad: In the state of Telangana, most students prefer to study in English medium schools. This emerges from a report presented by the Department of School Education.

According to the report, 73 per cent of the students study in English medium government schools.

The report says that more students preferred to take admission to the English medium schools, while only 23 per cent of the students wanted to take admission to Telugu medium schools. After analyzing the admissions of students in the 2019-20 academic year, the United District Information System for Education (UDISE) compiled this report. This report dealt with the students of the government schools, MPPS, ZPHS, KGBV, Residential Societies, Social Welfare, Tribal Welfare, BC Welfare, Minority Schools, Model Schools and Private Aid Schools.

According to the report, there are 40,898 schools in the state of Telangana. Of these, 10,500 schools are private schools and the remaining are government, privately supported, minority residential schools and welfare schools.

Despite the fact that the private schools were fewer in numbers than those run by the government, more students were found to study in the private schools.

In the state, there are 62,78,509 students studying from the first to the tenth standard in the schools. Of these, 34,88,680 students study in private schools. Similarly, there are a total of 2,76,888 teachers in the state, of which 1,28,440 teachers are employed in private schools. The report states that for every 23 students there is one teacher.

According to another finding of the report, the dropout rate of the students of the schools is also high. It was noted that 15.43 percent of the students discontinued their education between the first to the fifth standard. The report mentions that Rs 9,411 crores were spent in the year 2017-18, while R977 crores were spent in 2018-19 by the government.
