Ekocharita, a textile waste collection firm in the Slovak Republic, has reduced its waste collection costs by a fifth by installing sensors sourced from software developer Sensoneo beginning January 2021 on a pilot basis. Data from 600 containers by the end of June showed sensors helped reduce the collection time for a tonne of textile waste by 30 per cent.

The sensors also streamlined the overall logistics of the operation. Prior to this, drivers collected textile waste according to individual estimation.

Ekocharita manages 1,300 containers for clothes, shoes, toys and home textiles across 16,000 square metres.

Textile waste collection is complicated by consumers bringing unwanted clothes to collection depots or drop-off locations at irregular times. So it is difficult for waste drivers to predict when bins will be full. Real-time online monitoring via sensors then is of immense help.

The sensors monitor container fill levels 24 times a day and provide fire and tilt alarms whilst monitoring temperature, Slovak company Sensoneo said on its website.
