Chandigarh, August 17

A 22-year-old Maloya resident reportedly consumed ‘sleeping’ pills in front of police officials at the Sector 17 police station this afternoon, alleging police inaction in a case of domestic violence and dowry demand.

The victim, a mother of a five-year-old girl, was rushed to the GMSH-16 where her condition was stated to be stable. The police later said the woman had consumed sleeping pills. The woman’s mother alleged that her daughter was married to a Maloya resident, Saajid, a few years ago. Since their marriage, Saajid used to beat her over dowry demands. Two years ago, he turned her out of his house due to which her daughter had to stay in a rented accommodation in Maloya.

Saajid was missing from his house for the past one year, the mother alleged.

A case was registered in this regard and the woman was being asked to visit the police station time and again and made to wait for long hours. But no one from the husband’s family was called at the police station, she alleged.
