LIVE News Updates: Give CBI autonomy like EC, CAG, says Madras HC to Centre

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court observed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should be made more independent like the Election Commission of India. Court was hearing a plea seeking a CBI probe into an alleged financial fraud of Rs 300 crore.

Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice B Pugalendhi in their judgment said, "CBI should be an autonomous body. The CBI Director should be empowered to report directly to Minister and the Prime Minister with exclusive powers like the Cabinet Secretary.

Supreme Court Collegium recommends 9 names, including 3 women judges, for elevation as Supreme Court judges. Three women judges recommended are -Justice BV Nagarathna of Karnataka High Court, Justice Hima Kohli of Telangana High Court & Justice Bela Trivedi of Gujarat High Court
