BINDU GIRI LAUNCHES EXQUISITE COLLECTION SHOWCASING JAPANESE SHIBORI ON INDIAN HANDLOOMS
Bindu Giri, known for contemporary Indian sarees that celebrate authentic textiles and techniques, is delighted to announce the launch of the new Shibori collection. The range explores the iconic shibori dyeing technique of Japan, which uses intricate knots that render elegant circular motifs on the fabric. The infusion of Japanese shibori into Indian handloom sarees, which are then embellished with zari and thread work, creates a new idiom that brings two distinct craft cultures into unique and highly wearable pieces.
Established a decade ago, Bindu Giri is a Chennai-based brand that focuses on the revival and preservation of traditional weaving, through creating silks, Kanchivarams, ikats, jamdanis, kalamkaris and other heritage textiles that utilise modern colour and style sensibilities. Thoughtful attention is paid to functionality and versatility, ensuring that the sarees will suit contemporary lifestyles. A sense of subtle, understated luxury pervades the eclectic catalogue.
Speaking on the Shibori collection and how it fits into the brand’s ethos, designer and founder Ms Bindu Giri says, “The core philosophy that goes into designing every saree is that the piece should help the wearer experience and express her belief in herself. The authenticity of the timeless traditions behind the crafting of the piece should inspire her own authentic voice. The innovation that went into merging Japanese and Indian cultural blueprints should also inspire her to dream big, using her own personal style. At Bindu Giri, we believe that pride in wearing traditional weaves extends to pride in oneself, and in developing one’s own signature on the world.”
