Karnataka: Fearing Covid-19 infection, couple dies by suicide

MANGALURU: A couple allegedly committed suicide by hanging at their apartment in Chitrapura on Tuesday morning.
The deceased, Arya Suvarna, 45 and his wife Guna Suvarna, telephoned and also sent voice notes to the Mangaluru city police commissioner N Shashi Kumar informing him that they have decided to end their lives due to fear of Covid-19.
The police commissioner tried his best to trace the couple and stop them from taking the extreme step but in vain.
Guna Suvarna also left behind a suicide note. N Shashi Kumar said that police reached their apartment within 20 minutes after receiving the call but the couple was found hanging.
In his voice message, Arya Suvarna said: "We are having Covid-19 symptoms from the past few days. My wife is scared of the disease as she suffers from diabetes... I have kept Rs 1 lakh for our final rites.”
A case has been registered at the jurisdictional police station.
