Mizoram-Assam border issue: Tension escalates again, Assam Police fire on Mizoram civilians

The situation on the border continues to be volatile. On Saturday a bomb exploded in Lower Primary school in Gutguti area in Hailakandi district adjoining Kolasib district of Mizoram.
Fresh tension has erupted following Assam police allegedly firing on the three civilians from Mizoram.

Officials in Mizoram said that these people, including two women, have gone to pick up foodstuffs. Senior police officials including IGP Anurag Agarwal have rushed to the spot.

Deputy Commissioner of Kolasib H Lalthlangliana said that the incident took place at 2am on Tuesday when three residents of Vairengte town had gone to a normal supply of meat. The three civilians were identified as Lalchhandama, Lalduhawmi and Vanlalrovi, all from Hall Veng in Vairengte.

The Kolasib DC has written to his Hailakandi counterpart to look into matters and take immediate action to avoid law and order problems along the inter-state border.

Lalthlangliana also around 50 Assam police personnel were seen escorting a road construction at Aitlang on Monday. Mizoram already has road construction.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told media persons on Saturday that there are intelligence inputs that some sporadic incidents may take place.

On July 26 there were clashes along the border; seven people were killed and over 70 injured.

Following which there was an economic blockade along national highway 306.

CRPF is manning the disputed area.

Assam shares a 164.6-kilometre long inter-state border with Mizoram. This border is shared by three districts of South Assam — Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj — and three districts of Mizoram — Kolasib, Mamit and Aizawl.
