A frustrated Queensland tradesman has exploded at police officers on the border of New South Wales, after being stopped from going to work

The heated confrontation was captured on camera as the man pleaded with Covid border cops on the Gold Coast to let him through, shouting 'I'm not a Queenslander or a New South Wales person, I'm a f***ing Australian'.

Queensland slammed its entire border with NSW shut at 8pm on Saturday after the entire state was ordered into lockdown following record high coronavirus cases.

Queensland Police said it will check 'every vehicle' entering the state from NSW as fears grow about the spread of the Delta variant, with only a restricted category of essential workers permitted to cross between the states

Cross border workers and those living along state lines can still travel back and forth in some rare cases but must now obtain a special permit.

The man in the video was told by the officer he could venture into NSW under the rules, but would then have to quarantine for 14 days after he returned from the job site.

'I brought the Constitution. You can't restrict trade between states,' he said in the clip filmed by 7News.

'There's no (Covid-19) cases up in the Tweed Shire.

'You don't care if a business goes broke.

'I'm an Australian, mate. I'm not a Queenslander or a New South Wales (person). I'm f***ing Australian.'

Under the harsh rules residents living and working in Walgett Shire, Bourke Shire, Brewarrina Shire, Ballina Shire, Byron Shire, City of Lismore or Richmond Valley council areas can only cross the border without quarantining if they have obtained a permit.

As frustration grows over the border situation, NSW recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic with 478 locally-acquired cases and eight fatalities.

Huge traffic queues piled up on the police-controlled border on Monday, with Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman outlining that many motorists did not have the correct paperwork.

'With any new direction, there's always a period of time where there is a little bit of confusion in the community around what this direction means for them,' he said.

'If your plan is to come across the border, make sure you a letter from (your employer) or endorsement from a hospital if you're a worker.

'You need to have that in your possession, so you can present that to officers at the border.'

The chaos has also left 34 schools on the border closed with at-home learning now in place.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is making no apologies for her hard-line stance, vowing that she won't let the virus 'creep northwards'.

'Police and our officials are stopping everyone coming in from the southern states into Queensland from our airports and they will be stopping people coming in through the roads,' Ms Palaszczuk said.

'These strict border measures are necessary and they will be enforced.

'We are extremely concerned about the possibility of this virus coming into Queensland so we will take every precaution we possibly can.'

From Friday, only essential workers who have had at least one dose of the vaccine will be able to cross the Queensland border from NSW without quarantining.

Queensland recorded zero locally-acquired Covid cases on Monday.
