What are the benefits of "resetting" a weight when you stall?

I've been reading a few things recently about how to break past a plateau, and one (of many) of the ways to bust through a plateau is to reset your weights, then work your way back up which will supposedly help to push past your previous sticking point.

My question is, how and why does this work exactly? It goes against most things I've learnt over the years, because basically instead of trying to keep going week after week to push through the sticking point, you're doing the opposite and actually taking weight OFF the bar in order to eventually work your way back up to it and push past it.

Would be really interested in WHY this works, as it's an interesting method for breaking past a certain weight you've been stuck at on a lift for a while.
