2020 brought tourism to its knees. Perennial travellers pressed pause on their spirited escapades, occasional holidaymakers called off their annual excursions and almost everyone withdrew from anything to do with moving across cities and countries. And amidst all this, destinations that had been specifically benefitting from international tourists took a major hit. But, as it seems, not for long. Popular vacation spots like The Maldives, the USA and Abu Dhabi, among others, are paving the way for vaccine tourism—a strategy to attract more international travellers during the pandemic. So in case you haven't been jabbed yet, plan your next vacation to one of these beautiful locations. Here's everything you need to take note of, before you do.

The island nation—with its white-sand beaches, polychromatic coral reefs, countless adventurous activities and a number of overwater resorts—depends heavily on the tourism industry. Every year, affluent travellers from India and across the world visit the South Asian country for the luxurious holiday experience it offers. Hence, in an attempt to encourage more people to make their way to the postcard-perfect tropical spots of the Maldives, the tourism minister announced that foreign visitors will be offered vaccinations on arrival. The same is a part of the country's three-pronged initiative that champions the strategy of 'visit, vaccinate and vacation' in order to revive tourism during COVID-19. However, the plan will be in effect for tourists over 18 years of age, once the first and second doses have been administered to all the citizens of the country.

From family-friendly attractions like the Walt Disney World to more adventurous spots like the Grand Canyon, there's always something to explore in the USA—not to forget, the picturesque road trips that the country offers. And now, adding to the multitude of reasons why one should head to the country, it's providing travellers with free vaccine shots against COVID-19 at the airports as well as various places in select spots including New York, Alaska, Florida, San Francisco, Louisiana, Texas and Arizona. While you don't need an appointment for your first shot, you might for the second one, during your stay.

Backpackers, nature lovers, surfers, honeymooners, wellness enthusiasts—the Indonesian island of Bali welcomes travellers of different kinds all year round. Hopping on the bandwagon, the destination will soon offer vacation packages that include a vaccine, to international as well as local tourists. The two-pronged approach will give free access to China's Sinovac Biotech and the UK's AstraZeneca shots to domestic visitors, while tourists coming from abroad will be able to receive vaccines made by China's Sinopharm, among others, at a fee.
Russia

Packed with history, culture and natural beauty, Russia may not be the most frequented vacation spot for Indian travellers, but it offers an unexpected spectacle to those who do visit its scenic landscapes. The UNESCO World Heritage sites, architectural splendours, untouched lakes and fascinating wildlife, all contribute to its allure. Becoming yet another country to pave the way for vaccine tourism, it will administer Sputnik V—which has been approved by 66 nations already—to visitors from the foreign. Tourists are being offered vaccine plans lasting three weeks, for USD 1,500 to USD 2,500, excluding flight expenses.
Abu Dhabi

One of the most luxurious vacation spots for tourists originating from different parts of the world, Abu Dhabi is a modern metropolis with gleaming shopping malls, lively marinas and sprawling historical treasures. However, the destination—like several others—saw a decline in foreign visitors as COVID-19 impacted the way we travelled this past year. Giving a nod to vaccine tourism, it is now offering tourists who hold an entry visa, free vaccine shots of Pfizer or Sinopharm. Since June 11, international travellers have been able to book appointments through the COVID-19 vaccination app of the UAE, using their passport details. In case you haven't received the jab yet, plan your next visit to the extravagant location now.
