DMK MLA 'disappointed' over Stalin not keeping his promise to speed up probe into Jayalalithaa’s death

CHENNAI: DMK MLA G V Markandeyan on Monday expressed disappointment over Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin failing to keep his promise to expedite the probe into the circumstances leading to former chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s death. Speaking in the state assembly, the legislator appealed to the CM to speed up the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of inquiry probing Jayalalithaa’s death.
“I request on their (AIADMK) behalf to fulfil the poll promise soon and produce the wrongdoers before the court of law at the earliest," Markandeyan said in a sarcastic vein during the debate on the revised budget and the agriculture budget for 2021-22. Incidentally, Markandeyan joined DMK in October 2020 and was fielded in Vilathikulam constituency for the April assembly election.
Objecting to Markandeyan’s remark, AIADMK’s deputy leader of opposition O Panneerselvam said it was against the assembly rules to discuss matters that were sub judice. OPS said the Supreme Court had stayed (in April 2019) the Arumughaswamy commission probe and he appealed to the deputy speaker K Pitchandi, who was in the chair, to expunge Markandeyan’s remarks.
The deputy speaker said the MLA had only made a general statement and declined to expunge his remarks.
