England's second Test hopes hang in the balance with India needing just three wickets to clinch victory at Lord's as Joe Root is the ONLY one of hosts' top six to reach double figures

  • India need three wickets in the final Lord's session to clinch the second Test
  • Virat Kohli's side declared for 298-8 just after lunch with a lead of 272 to chase
  • Rory Burns and Dom Sibley went for ducks in the first ten balls of the innings
  • Haseeb Hameed and Jonny Bairstow fell before tea but Joe Root fell for 33
  • Mohammed Siraj dismissed Moeen Ali and Sam Curran in successive deliveries
  • Earlier, India's ninth-wicket partnership frustrated England's bowlers on day five
  • Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah hit a 89-run stand before the declaration
  • Ollie Robinson removed Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant earlier on for England

England's hopes of a second Test draw hang in the balance after they slipped for 67-4 at tea in their unlikely bid to chase India's second innings lead of 272 on day five.

The hosts lost Rory Burns and Dom Sibley for ducks in the first ten balls of their innings while Haseeb Hameed could only add nine runs from 15 overs before being removed.

Joe Root managed to come in and steady the ship at four by hitting 33 from 57 balls but Jonny Bairstow fell just before tea after a successful lbw review by captain Virat Kohli.

England's middle order and Root now need to produce 205 runs from 38 remaining overs left in the evening session at Lord's, while India require six more exceptional bits of cricket to clinch the second Test.

The hosts' innings started poorly when Burns's leading edge was caught by Mohammed Shiraj from Jasprit Bumrah's third ball of the innings.

Seven balls later and the hosts' other opener Sibley fell for no score with the England man hitting a thin edge to Risabh Pant, with the 25-year-old not even contesting the call by walking away from the crease.

Root and Hameed carried England to 44 runs before the next wicket fell as Ishant Sharma trapped the latter for lbw, a feat that was repeated in the final ball before tea.

Bairstow had mustered just two runs from 24 balls when Sharma trapped another England batsman and a successful review from Kohli means Root and Buttler will look to keep India's bowlers at bay after tea.

Earlier in the day, tailenders Shami and Bumrah put on an impressive 89-run partnership to frustrate England's bowlers on day five at Lord's and push the second Test towards a draw.

Root's side began the final day in promising fashion by as Ollie Robinson removed Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant early on to work their way through the batting order. But Shami and Bumrah eased concerns for the visitors which allowed them to retire on 298-8.

Shami hit a remarkable half-century, sealed with a four and a six in consecutive balls, to move his partnership with Bumrah beyond 70 runs.

It was only Shami's second Test half-century in 53 matches with the 30-year-old bizarrely taking off his helmet when celebrating his half-ton. He reached lunch on 52 runs, the highest ever Test total he has achieved in his career, surpassing the 51 total he mustered at Trent Bridge in 2014.

Bumrah, who suffered a bash on the head from Mark Wood's bouncer early on, also hit a new Test batting high of 30 in Monday's morning session, with his career batting average 3.55 coming into the day's play.

But Bumrah will be relieved that England captain Root dropped him at first slip on 22 after the India tailender edged Moeen Alli's delivery in another frustration for the hosts and the home crowd at Lord's.

Things looked brighter for England as they limited the normally-impressive Pant to just 22 runs as he flicked Robinson's delivery into the arms of Buttler when India's lead was at 167.

Six overs later, the Sussex bowler trapped Sharma for lbw with a slower ball to leave England needing two more wickets with India leading by 182.

After lunch, Shami and Bumrah took their totals to 56 and 34 respectively - both not out - before Virat Kohli brought them back with 60 overs left in the day.
