Asus has launched the new ROG Phone 5s and the ROG Phone 5s Pro gaming phones that succeed the original line, which launched in April this year. The new series gets the Snapdragon 888+ processor, a bump over the Snapdragon 888 which the original line uses. The latest processor brings a boost in AI and performance, of course.
The difference between the ROG Phone 5s and the 5s Pro is mainly on the back. The ROG Phone 5s Pro gets the PMOLED display and two sets of touch sensors integrated at the same time. There is no display on the rear panel of the vanilla model, just an RGB-backlit Republic of Gamers logo. Both the phones get the ultrasonic AirTrigger 5 shoulder buttons.
The retail box of the Asus ROG Phone 5s Pro also includes AeroActive Cooler 5. Asus claims that the AeroActive Cooler 5 intakes and expels an incredible amount of cool air directly on the center of the phone – right where the CPU is, to bring at least a 10-degrees drop in CPU temperature.
The cooler normally sells for $70, so if ROG Phone 5s buyers want to have it then they need to purchase it separately. Both the phones, otherwise, have a re-shaped vapor chamber and extensive graphite sheets also that help to spread the heat evenly across the device to reduce heat build-up in the middle.
The battery has been split into two parts as well – one located on each side of the CPU. This further ensures the heat generated by the CPU is transferred to all the edges and corners of the chassis.
The ROG Phone 5s Pro also gets 18GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB UFS 3.1 storage. On the other hand, the ROG Phone 5s comes in multiple configurations – 8/128GB; 12/256GB; 16/256GB. None of the models support microSD slots but they do support NTFS-formatted external USB drives.
The main display remains unchanged since the original ROG Phone 5 series, which is 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED with 2448x1080 pixels resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. The panels are HDR10+ certified as well.
Both the phones run on Android 11 as well. The ROG Phone 5s and the 5s Pro get the 6000mAH battery with 65W wired fast charging support, side connector with USB 3.1 Gen2 speeds, DisplayPort 1.4, and fast-charging support too. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom.
The pricing and availability of the phones are unknown. Asus might announce the details soon.
