Incidentally, this column was written on August 16 during dur maharat of 12.51 pm-1.43 pm, an inauspicious period. That explains a lot.

Whether it’s the old Thums Up jingle of ‘Happy days are here again,’ or the more recent (and less confirmatory) GoI advert of ‘Achche din,’ we’re all suckers for the good life. But as the saying goes, there’s nothing called a free lunch.
Whether it’s the old Thums Up jingle of ‘Happy days are here again,’ or the more recent (and less confirmatory) GoI advert of ‘Achche din,’ we’re all suckers for the good life. But as the saying goes, there’s nothing called a free lunch. Which is why Narendra Modi’s latest exhortation to treat the next 25 years as ‘amrit kaal’ – auspicious time – for India’s development brings you-reap-what-you-sow into the matrix.

Whether people advantage of this period to get good RoI, better minds will venture to find out. But here, we fixate on amrit kaal itself. Going by the Vedic choghadiya panchang (calendar), every day and night is divvied up into seven auspicious, so-so and inauspicious periods. Amrit (divine nectar) – along with shubh (propitious) and labh (profit) – suggests a time to do things if you want them done best. HR managers may disapprove, but tomorrow, for example, amrit kaal is slated to be between 5.19 pm and 6.49 pm IST.

That’s when you should file that report or press the ‘send’ button. For India, metaphorically, the PM says it’s the next 25 years. As far as getting to business now to be the king of good times later (any resemblance to a beer tag line is coincidental), we can do that.
