Malaysia Cabinet Resigns as Nation Grapples With Pandemic

By Chester Tay

Malaysia's cabinet resigned Monday after 18 months in power, raising political uncertainty at a time that the Southeast Asia nation is under lockdown and grappling with record Covid-19 cases.

Cabinet members tendered their resignations to the country's monarch, said Khairy Jamaluddin, minister of science, technology and innovation, on his Instagram account.

Mr. Khairy made the announcement after attending a special cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who later met with King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. Mr. Muhyiddin has yet to make an official announcement after his meeting with the Malaysian king.

The announcement came after 15 members of Parliament in the ruling coalition--including former prime minister Najib Razak--earlier this month withdrew their support for the current government.

The added political uncertainty comes at a time of further Covid-19 outbreaks in the country, with new cases at record levels of more than 20,000 a day.
