A 15-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after three teenagers allegedly attacked Wallabies legend Toutai Kefu and his family wielding a machete, a knife and an axe during a terrifying home invasion.

Kefu, 47, was rushed to hospital with a knife wound to his stomach after the trio allegedly broke into his home in Coorparoo in Brisbane's south-east at 3am on Sunday morning.

The most-capped Wallaby number eight ever is believed to have been stabbed after refusing to hand his car keys over to the group when he we went downstairs to investigate a noise disturbance.

His wife Rachel and adult children Josh, 21, and Maddie, 18, also suffered stab and slash wounds after following him downstairs.

It is believed Rachel had been attacked with a machete. Josh had deep cuts to his arm which require immediate surgery.

The rugby legend underwent surgery on Monday and is expected to survive his wounds.

His mother and daughter are expected to go into surgery on Tuesday.

The three intruders allegedly ran from the house after the attack and were confronted by next-door neighbour Ben Cannon, a local real estate agent and cousin of Toutai's former Wallaby team-mate Brendan Cannon.

While two of the alleged home-invaders escaped in a car, Cannon tackled the third – a 15-year-old who was still reportedly armed with a knife – and held him until police arrived.

One of the other alleged assailants, also 15, was arrested when he sought hospital treatment for a wound to his back later in the morning.

The first teenager has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault causing grievous bodily harm and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, break and enter, burglary and deprivation of liberty.

He has been refused bail.

Police allege the trio had earlier stolen a Hyundai iX35 from a home in Forest Lake after pushing a woman to the ground before trying to steal another vehicle from the Kefu home.

The altercation began after Kefu's family was woken by the sound of the intruders, Queensland Police Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said.

'The information police received is that people unknown to the family had entered the house and people had been stabbed,' Det Supt Fleming said.

'I understand the residents of the house woke to noises inside the house and one of the adults went to investigate those noises.

'That person was accosted by at least one of the offenders in the premises and threatened to be stabbed if they didn’t hand over vehicle keys.

'Other members of the family came to that person’s aid and during this time very significant injuries occurred to the family as a result of what we will allege is the actions of the offenders who have broken into the family’s home this morning.'

A Queensland Police spokesman earlier said a 'violent altercation' had left four of the home's occupants injured.

'Police have two males in custody following a burglary and wounding in Cooparoo this morning,' the statement read.

'Police were called to Buena Vista Avenue about 3am in relation to an incident.

'Early information suggested a number of males were disturbed breaking into a dwelling there and a violent altercation left four members of the house injured.

'One male was restrained and taken into custody at the scene.

'Further offenders fled in a car toward Woolloongabba.
