The Women and Child Development department has warned of strict action against its officials after some of them cited Covid restrictions as the reason for being late to work

On July 13, the department had issued showcause notices to 49 of its employees — including three deputy directors and seven assistant directors — for reporting late, observing that many employees were reaching office well after the reporting time and leaving before the end of office hours.

A recent memorandum noted that all the officials had made a common plea in their replies that “the late attendance was due to Covid restrictions imposed on the public transport systems by the government i.e. metro, bus etc”.

The justification however was “not found satisfactory” as the restrictions are publicly known and the officials should have made an early start to be able to report to work on time, it added.

The officials have been directed to ensure “strict punctuality” or be found liable for proceedings for violating their service rules.
