AgenciesPrime Minister Modi, while paying homage to freedom fighters during his speech from the Red Fort, said on Sunday that “Matangini Hazra was from Assam”, triggering a controversy in Bengal political circles. Matangini Hazra was a freedom fighter from Bengal’s Tamluk region in East Midnapore.
Stating that the wrong reference by the PM was “unfortunate”, Trinamool Congress and the Congress demanded the PM’s immediate apology to the nation for making such an error in his speech.
Matangini Hazra was a freedom fighter who fought for the Indian Independence movement. She was shot dead by the British Indian police in 1942 in front of the Tamluk Police Station in East Midnapore district. She was called “Gandhi Buri” as she actively participated in the Gandhian movement. In 1905, she actively took part in the freedom movement as a Gandhian. In 1932, she participated in the Civil Disobedience movement and was arrested for breaking the Salt Act.
BJP leader and former Mizoram governor Tathagata Roy said it was a slip of tongue by the PM.
