75th I-Day celebrated in Kashmir valley, LG Sinha hoists flag in Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 15 (UNI) The 75th Independence Day (ID) was on Sunday celebrated in Srinagar and all other district and tehsil headquarters in the Kashmir valley peacefully amid tight security arrangements.

The main function was held at S K International in Srinagar where Lt Governor Manoj Sinha hoisted the national flag and took salute at the march past and witnessed cultural programme presented by different groups despite heavy rain.

Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) slain top commander Burhan Wani’s father Muzaffar Wani, a headmaster of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) also hoisted national flag in Tral in south Kashmir district of Pulwama as a part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’’.

For the first time, there was no internet ban or restrictions on I-Day in Srinagar. However, sharp shooters and drones besides hundreds of security force personnel were deployed in and around the venue to prevent any attack by militants, who made abortive attempts to cause large scale disturbance during the past few days, including a grenade attack in the uptown last night in which a CRPF jawan was injured.

Mr Sinha hoisted the national flag and took salute at the march past presented by BSF, CRPF, ITBP, JKAP, JPK, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Service, Forest guards and other contingents.

Despite rain, parade was followed by cultural programme by different groups, singing patriotic and other songs.

Reports received said national flags were hoisted at all district and tehsil headquarters in the Kashmir valley. At Panchayat levels tri-colours were unfurled. Besides national flags were hoisted at all educational institutions, government offices and other institutions in the valley.

Officials said there was no report of any untoward incident during the celebrations.
