The people of India will reject the “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi because it aims to divide Indians, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Pakistan on Saturday.

In a statement, Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, spokesperson of the Ministry said marking August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day invokes history in a “one sided manner”.

“Far from doing anything to heal old wounds, they would go to any extent to sow further dissensions for electoral gains. We are sure that the people of goodwill in India would completely reject this political and publicity stunt that only seeks to divide,” said Mr. Chaudhri.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that August 14 will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

The MoFA said the declaration amounts to distortion of history.

“It is shameful that the practitioners of ‘Hindutva’ ideology, and purveyors of hate and violence, would so hypocritically and one-sidedly invoke the tragic events and mass migration that occurred in the wake of independence in 1947,” Mr Chaudhri said.
