The pandas are on a 10-year loan from China since 2012. Their reproduction is notoriously difficult.

To make matters worse, the window for conception for pandas is small, about 24-48 hours. The giant pandas are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with less than 2,000 thought to be left in the world.
