Tamil actress Meera Mitun, who has been booked for allegedly making casteist remarks on social media, was arrested on Saturday by the Cyber Crime Wing of Tamil Nadu Police from Kerala's Alappuzha. She was arrested after she did not appear before the police on August 12.
Meera Mitun was booked for making casteist remarks in a Twitter video that had gone viral after which Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and former MP Vanni Arasu filed complaint agains her. The Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front had also filed a complaint against the South actress.
The 33-year-old has been booked under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act.
Meera in the viral video had purportedly said, "I am not speaking ill about members of the SC community. However, the members of the community face problems mostly because of their involvement in illegal activities and crimes."
She also allegedly said that SC directors and other people from the community in the movie industry do 'cheap things.' "It is time to chuck out all the SC directors and other people from the film industry," she had said.
After the video went viral, VCK chief and MP Thol Thiruvamavalavan shared it, saying she and the interviewer, both should be booked by police.
Meera, in a video taken before her arrest, said, screaming, that she has been tortured and alleged that cops were harassing her.
