Bihar floods: 7 washed away in floodwater, over 20 lakh affected

Patna, Aug 14 (UNI) With a constant increase in the water level of river Ganga, the flood situation in Bihar has become grim as 7 people were washed away in the flood water which engulfed 15 districts affecting 20 lakh 41 thousand people.



According to Central Water Commission, the water level of river Ganga was flowing above the red mark from Buxar to Bhagalpur districts. Its tributaries Sone and river Punpun were also flowing above the danger mark.





Disaster management department sources said that that the districts which were affected include Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Khagaria, Patna, Vaishali, Bhojpur, Lakhisarai, Bhagalpur, Buxar, Saran, Begusarai, Katihar, Munger and Samastipur. Altogether 570 panchayats of 86 blocks of these districts were affected by the floodwater.

The floodwater was also creating havoc in the Danapur riverine area of the state capital Patna where communication of 6 panchayats with the town headquarter was totally snapped and the people were migrating to a safer place to save their life.



Following the severe flood situation in Munger district, some trains were suspended while the route of some others was diverted. Road communication were also slapped as the flood water was flowing on national highway 80.



The disaster management department informed that 8 teams of NDRF and nine of SDRF have taken up the relief and rescue operations in the affected districts.

Sources at the disaster management department said that 8903 people have taken shelter in 31 relief camps. The sources said that 254 community kitchens were functioning to provide food to the affected people.
