The Bulls overcame a sluggish first half to blow away the Lions 48-21 and strengthen their position at the top of the Currie Cup table.
An evenly-contested first half suggested a close finish might be on the cards at Ellis Park, but a very strong second-half showing by the Bulls - helped in no small part by their superior bench - saw the defending champions come away with the well-deserved win.
It took the Bulls a little while to find their rhythm, with some early lapses in discipline putting their opponents on the front foot.
A fourth-minute penalty goal from Chris Smith was followed by three Jordan Hendrikse shots in quick succession, as the Lions opened up a 9-3 lead.
Ironically, it was a yellow card to Bulls hooker Jan-Hendrik Wessels in the 17th minute that seemed to spark the men in blue.
Despite being a forward down, a powerful surge took them all the way to the line where big lock Janko Swanepoel was able to crash over for the opening try of the match in the 22nd minute.
Seven minutes later, the Bulls were in again after some quick thinking from No 8 WJ Steenkamp, who charged over for the try after taking a quick tap-and-go from right in front. Smith nailed his second conversion to put his side eight points clear.
The Lions needed to respond and did so late in the first half from a powerful rolling maul close to the line, with a TMO check not ruling out a try to PJ Steenkamp, who had picked the ball up from behind the ruck before going over.
Hendrikse added the extras as the Lions found themselves just one point down at the break, trailing 16-17. Unfortunately, they would fade badly in the second half as the Bulls took total control of the contest thanks to four unanswered tries.
The first was thanks to a great step and score from flyhalf Smith early in the half, as he took on the defence from behind a five-metre scrum and was duly rewarded.
The Lions thought they'd hit back shortly after via captain Burger Odendaal, but a check upstairs saw what would have been a great try ruled out for a forward pass in the build-up.
Instead, it was the Bulls who struck again within minutes, this time courtesy of substitute prop Gerhard Steenkamp, who latched onto a lovely pass from Muller Uys before powering over the line.
The introduction of Johan Goosen was hardly what the Lions needed at this stage, but the Springbok did join the party and was rewarded with a try within minutes after collecting a pass from Smith following a quickly-taken penalty.
And the Bulls were over again within minutes as wily winger Madosh Tambwe dotted down following a clever little kick-through from Lionel Mapoe.
The Lions hit back not long after via a good try from substitute prop Nathan McBeth after hammering away at the Bulls line and finally finding a way through, but it was far too little too late.
The score only slightly interrupted the Bulls' celebrations, anyway, as there was time for Zak Burger to add one more try to their tally in the closing minutes.
