Kolkata: In the next few days, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), implementing agency of the New Garia-Airport corridor, will start building an alternative road space at the Chingrighata crossing. Traffic will be diverted through it to facilitate the Metro pier construction in the middle. Road construction and shifting of underground utilities should be over by the month-end, so piling work of Pier 318 can start in September beginning.
RVNL, Kolkata Police and KMDA conducted a joint inspection of the site on Thursday. The former shared an elaborate plan with the other two agencies on how traffic could flow once 13 metres in the middle of the crossing is barricaded. A matching road space will be created to make up for the blocked area.
Last August, TOI reported how a major impasse had ended for the 32km corridor as IIT-Kharagpur cleared the contentious Pier 318 planned right in the middle of Chingrighata crossing.
