Rs 1,000 p.m scheme for House wives : No need to change household head name in ration cards

Chennai, Aug 13 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government on Friday clarified that
there was no need to change name of the household head name in ration
cards for the Rs 1,000 per month scheme for home makers.
Presenting the budget in the State Assembly, finance Minister Palanivel
Thiagarajan said an important scheme relates to the payment of Rs.1,000
every month to women heads of households.
There has been a mistaken perception that this assistance would be provided
only to female headed households and many people are attempting to get their
ration cards changed to show a female member as the head of the household.
"Let me assure all of you that the intention of the Government is to provide
this assistance to “home makers”. Therefore there is no need to change the
name of the head of the household in ration cards on this account", he said.
Noting that this scheme is intended for the genuinely poor, the Minister said
at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic when the Government paid Rs.4,000 to
all rice card holders in the State, there was criticism and litigation that such
a universal payment should not be made to the well off and the salaried.
"To ensure that the payment of basic entitlement income is targeted to the
genuinely poor, the Government in consultation with experts is formulating
guidelines on the objective criteria by which the eligible households will
be identified for this scheme", he said.
These guidelines will be extensively publicised and as soon as the eligible
households are identified, the Government will ensure that this scheme is
effectively implemented, Mr Palanivel said.
The Minister said there are many expectations from this Government led by
Chief Minister M K Stalin and the difficult financial situation makes the
fulfilment of all the promises at one go difficult.
The Government is carefully examining the promises made to determine how
to go about implementing them, he added.
