FDA authorises third shot of Pfizer or Moderna for immunocompromised

The FDA has authorised a third shot of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for some people with weakened immune systems.

The FDA’s acting commissioner Dr Janet Woodcock, said in a statement late Thursday, said: “The country has entered yet another wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the FDA is especially cognisant that immunocompromised people are particularly at risk for severe disease.

“Today’s action allows doctors to boost immunity in certain immunocompromised individuals who need extra protection from Covid-19. As we’ve previously stated, other individuals who are fully vaccinated are adequately protected and do not need an additional dose of Covid-19 vaccine at this time.”

The FDA determined that transplant recipients and others with a similar level of compromised immunity can receive a third dose of the vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna at least 28 days after getting their second shot.

There was no mention of immune-compromised patients who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Additionally, the US’s National Education Association President Becky Pringle, gave support for an educator vaccine and testing requirement, she said: “No one wants to be back in the classroom with their students more than educators, and student safety is our number one priority.

“NEA has said from the beginning that we need to follow the science, and evidence shows that COVID-19 vaccines, combined with other safety measures, are the most powerful weapon we have against the pandemic.

“Educators’ belief in the essential role vaccines play in the safety of our school communities is evidenced by the nearly 90% of NEA members who report that they are fully vaccinated.
