New Delhi
Recently,
Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, expressed his concern
on increasing road safety and asked SIAM to consider making 6 Airbags
mandatory in every car sold in India.
He
tweeted that, he appealed all Private Vehicle Manufacturers to compulsorily
provide a minimum of 6 Airbags across all variants and segments of the vehicle.
He added that he also emphasized on the need for a quick roll-out of Flex-Fuel
Vehicles (FFVs) capable of running on 100% ethanol and gasoline into the Indian
auto market within a year’s time.
Flex-fuel engines have been taking traction all over the world. These engines can run equally on biofuel and petrol. Brazil and the US have already taken lead in using flex-fuel vehicles.
The
automobile sector throughout the world is witnessing major tectonic shifts.
Electric Vehicles are about to replace their fossil counterparts. Self-driving
vehicles are about to become new normal.
The
road safety situation in India is the worst in the world. Currently, 400 lives
are lost every day due to road accidents.
India is heavily dependent on fossil fuels which causes damage to the environment and puts a strain on the finances. To reduce that, the government is pushing for flexible engines which will work the same on both ethanol and petrol. The minister made his intention clear in front of the industry body and has asked to take some concrete steps to make it a reality within the next year.
