Certain enthusiast cars need very little said about them to garner a great deal of excitement. The Honda Integra Type R is undoubtedly one of those. Tell the right person you drive a DC2 or a DC5 - or even just 'Teg, in some cases - and their interest will be immediately piqued. Soon you'll be discussing the merits of B18 vs. K20, JDM vs. UKDM, five gears versus six and so on. Nobody else will be around, but you'll have a friend for life.
Such is the reputation of both generations of Type R that confirmation of a new Integra - albeit only from Acura for the moment - is very exciting news. There's very little to go on for the moment, presumably as Acura knows full well that just dropping the name is enough for the world to look up. "A legend returns", reads the press material, noting that it's now 35 years since the Acura brand launched - with an Integra part of the original two-car line up.
"I'm thrilled to say Integra is returning to the Acura line-up with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way - design, performance and the overall driving experience", said John Ikeda, Acura VP and Brand Officer. Though a 2022 introduction has been announced, very little else has for the moment.
One to keep an eye on then, for certain. Coupes have fallen somewhat by the wayside of late, so it's great to hear that an iconic name is set to return. Let's hope Toyota's lead with the GR 86 - rather than Nissan's with the 400Z - can be followed and the Integra finds its way to Europe in time. Even 20 years since the last one, that badge still has quite the following.
