Digital entertainment and technology firm JetSynthesys said that it has acquired Chennai-based Skyesports, one of India’s largest esports organizations with a grassroots play. The Sachin Tendulkar and Adar Poonawalla backed JetSynthesys will have a 65% stake in Jet Skyesports Gaming, the new entity. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Rajan Navani, vice chairman and managing director, JetSynthesys said, “Next year is a year of reckoning for esports globally as it becomes a medal event at the Asian Games, the first in the history of any such prestigious global tournament. Indian gaming has immense potential, and the talent which resides in the non-metros often goes unnoticed. Our vision, therefore, is to build esports at the grassroot level and individuals who have a passion for gaming make a career of it,” said Rajan Navani, vice chairman and managing director, JetSynthesys.
The acquisition will help Skyesports strengthen its presence pan-India and expand to South Asia over time. Skyesports has created its own tournament IPs like Skyesports League, Skyesports Grand Slam, Skyesports Championship and creates mobile games.
“The esports and gaming market is growing at a rapid pace in the country and the investment comes as a strategic move and at the right time to explore bigger opportunities,” said Shiva Nandy, the CEO and founder of Skyesports. “We will work together to create many IPs for the gaming and esports enthusiasts in the country. Our core focus will still be on the grassroots level and on regional content and we will expand exponentially,” said Gnana Shekar, CMO of Skyesports.”
JetSynthesys is also co-founder Nodwin Gaming, among the biggest esports firms in the company. Skyesports has a strong presence in South India and the most number of tournament IPs in India with a combined total viewership of over 100 million across all platforms (Facebook, YouTube, and Loco). Navani said that the aim would be to use this to increase its presence at the grassroots level and make it more mainstream to be able to create international level talent who can represent India at global events.
