Greystones’ Dylan Holmes made history on his home course on Tuesday when he beat Paul Dunne’s record by two weeks to become the youngest winner of the Wicklow Boys Championship.
The 14-year-old two handicapper has been a serial winner for the past few years, but he claimed what is undoubtedly the highlight of his young career when he carded rounds of 68, 68, 72 and 71 to win by five strokes on three-over-par from Portmarnock’s Brandon St John.
The tournament, sponsored again this year by Wood Group Homes, is the last remaining 72-hole, Under 18 strokeplay event on the golfing calendar.
It has been running for over thirty-five years and boasts an illustrious list of winners, including former tour professionals Peter Lawrie and Keith Nolan and two-time winner Dunne.
Holmes, a son of PGA professional Karl, opened with a brace of 68s to lead by seven strokes from Castle’s Charlie Quinn and Naas’ Sam Gammell on two-under at halfway.
Holmes carded a third-round 72 to lead by four shots on one-over from Bray’s Gavin Rochford.
But after opening with three bogeys to find himself tied for the lead with Rochford before he made three birdies in a row from the sixth to lead by five shots from the Bray man and by six from St John with nine holes to go.
Under pressure, Holmes bogeyed the 10th and 11th, but he recovered impressively by hitting a glorious shot to three feet on 12th to set up his 14th birdie of the event, then parred his way home to win by five strokes just days after finishing fourth in the Ulster Under 16 Boys Championship.
Greystones Golf Club clearly has a new star on its hands, but it can also be grateful to Tom Byrne, who has been running this event so efficiently for the past 20 years and to his team of Niall Byrne, Darragh Browne and Alan Keane.
