Technology has always paved the way for transforming our lives one way or the other. And one such example is housing industries across the globe moving at an unprecedented pace. The construction industry in India is no different, which is continuing to evolve through technology adoption.
Under the government’s flagship housing initiative ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U)’, a Technology Sub-Mission (TSM) has been set up to facilitate the adoption of modern, innovative green technologies and building materials for faster and quality construction of houses across India.
Further, the Technology Sub-Mission will also facilitate the preparation and adoption of layout designs and innovative building plans suitable for various geo-climatic zones. It will also assist various states & cities across the country in deploying disaster-resistant and environment-friendly technologies.
In coordination with various regulatory and administrative bodies for scaling the deployment of modern construction technologies, TSM will also work with other agencies working in green and energy-efficient technologies, climate changes etc.
The Sub-Mission will work on the following aspects:
• Design & Planning
• Innovative technologies & materials
• Green buildings using natural resources
• Earthquake and other disaster resistant technologies and designs
• Adopting simple concept of designs ensuring adequate sunlight and air should be adopted
Notably, the Union government and State government would also collaborate with IITs, NITs, and Planning & Architecture institutes for developing technical solutions, capacity building, and handholding of states and cities.
Bringing innovative construction technologies with Global Housing Technology Challenge-India (GHTC-India)
Under the ambit of Technology Sub-Mission (TSM), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has also initiated Global Housing Technology Challenge-India (GHTC-India), which aims to identify and mainstream innovative housing technologies from across the globe that are disaster-resilient, sustainable, cost-effective, fast and adaptable to suit different geo-climatic conditions in India.
Under GHTC-India, more than 54 innovative technologies from across the world have been shortlisted in 6 broad categories.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself laid the foundation of the Light House Projects in January this year under the Global Housing Technology Challenge-India (GHTC-India), which would lead to the construction of over 1,000 houses each in these six cities in a span of 12 months.
Demonstrating innovative construction technologies identified under GHTC-India, 6 Light House Projects (LHPs) using 6 different state-of-art technologies are being constructed in 6 States i.e. Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Gujarat (Rajkot),Tamilnadu (Chennai), Jharkhand (Ranchi), Tripura (Agartala) and Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow) for universal adoption and replication by the housing and real estate sector.
These LHPs will serve as LIVE Laboratories for various aspects of the Transfer of technologies for field use, such as planning, designing, construction practices, testing, etc
A special mention by PM in ‘Mann Ki Baat’
In his latest monthly radio talk show ‘ Mann Ki Baat’ PM Modi also talked about these modern techniques and said, “while we are discussing technology I want to discuss an interesting subject. Recently you must have read that a start-up established by an alumni of IIT Madras has made a 3D printed house. The construction of the house through 3D printing, how did this happen after all? Actually, this start-up, first of all, fed a 3 Dimensional design in a 3D printer and then through concrete of a special kind fabricated a 3D structure layer by layer. You will be happy to know that many experiments of this kind are being done throughout the country.”
Further the Prime Minister talked about the ‘Global Housing Technology Challenge’ to invite such innovative companies from all over the world. He said,“In the project at Indore, Pre-Fabricated Sandwich Panel System is being used in place of Brick-and-Mortar Walls. In Rajkot, the Light House is being made with French Technology in which through a tunnel Monolithic Concrete construction technology is being used. In Chennai, the Pre-cast Concrete system technologies from America and Finland are being used. In Ranchi, houses will be built using the 3D Construction System of Germany. In Agartala, a technology from New Zealand are being used, houses that can withstand major earthquakes are being made with steel frame. Meanwhile, in Lucknow technology from Canada is being used.”
