Mandaviya discusses WHO approval of Covaxin with Swaminathan

New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday discussed the World Health Organisation's approval of Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin with Soumya Swaminathan, the global health monitoring agency's chief scientist.

“Held a meeting with Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of @WHO. We had a productive discussion on WHO’s approval of @BharatBiotech’s COVAXIN.

@DoctorSoumya also appreciated India’s efforts for the containment of #COVID19,” Mandaviya said in a tweet.

Bharat Biotech has submitted to WHO all documents required for Emergency Use Listing (EUL) of Covaxin as of July 9 and the review process by the health body has begun, the government informed Parliament last month.

Swaminathan, a former head of ICMR, also discussed with Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh various aspects of the current COVID pandemic in the country.

Emphasising the importance of mass vaccination through easy availability and accessibility, Swaminathan said that even though the vaccine may not be able to provide absolute protection against different variants of Virus, it can certainly reduce the risk of death and complications.

Swaminathan said that there will be a need to stand on guard in the months to come as well.
