RANCHI: Prime Minister Narendra
Modi, Jharkhand
governor Ramesh Bais, RJD working president Tejaswi Yadav and former Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi were among several others who took to social media to wish Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren on his 46th
birthday on Tuesday.
Soren’s colleagues in the state cabinet also extended their wishes on the occasion. Meanwhile, several job aspirants tried to march towards Soren’s official residence to demand starting of recruitment processes for government jobs. Incidentally, they observed Tuesday as ‘Berozgar Diwas’, saying the government has gone back on its promise to provide five-lakh jobs every year and the announcement to celebrate 2021 as the ‘employment year’.
Wishing Soren in the morning, Modi tweeted, “Best wishes to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji. Praying for his long life and good health.”
Soren, his close associates said, celebrated his birthday privately with his wife and children at their official residence on Kanke Road. However, senior bureaucrats, office bearers of the ruling JMM and several of his well-wishers visited him.
A statement issued by Soren's office said he spent considerable time attending to people from all walks of life, who had assembled at his home with their grievances. He later issued directives to officials concerned to resolve them, the statement said.
Meanwhile, JMM held a low-key celebration at its party headquarters in Bariatu. Party general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey, along with JMM women's wing president Mahua Manjhi and Ranchi district president Mushtaque Ahmed led the celebrations and cut a cake in Soren’s honour.
“Since assuming office in late 2019, Hemant ji has ably steered Jharkhand through the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic and managed to limit the loss of lives and checked the spread of the deadly virus. We hope he dispenses his duties in the best of health and takes Jharkhand into the path of development,” Pandey said.
While Soren was being photographed speaking to people at his home, more than 500 people, mostly students and aspirants of jobs in various government posts, assembled at the foot of the Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Morhabadi, demanding initiation of recruitment processes.
Under the banners of Jharkhand Panchayat Sachivalaya Swayamsevak Sangh, Jharkhand Polytechnic Chatra Sangh, aspirants eyeing jobs in the Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) and various students wings began a march to Kanke Road in a bid to gherao Soren's residence and demand regularisation, initiation of appointment and amendments to appointment rules. However, over 200 policemen stopped them with barricades in Morhabadi itself.
“This government had promised five lakh jobs to the youth annually. During the campaigning, they had also promised to regularise the panchayat secretariat volunteers. But it has been nearly two years and nothing has moved in that direction,” said Baijnath Ram, a job aspirant from Palamu.
