Landslides have been occurring in the region of Manali and its surrounding areas very regularly now due to monsoon.
In a tragic incident, Around 40-42 people travelling in a bus are feared killed in a massive landslide in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh after a bus, truck, and some light vehicles were hit by boulders and debris near Chaura on Rampur-Juri Road on Wednesday. Six people in small vehicles have been rescued.
As boulders are still rolling down on the highway, the teams will face difficulty in rescue operations. A few injured people have reportedly been rescued.
Officials said the exact number of casualties is still to be ascertained as most of the bodies are buried under debris. The focus is on saving the trapped people who could be still alive.
Bhawanagar SDM Manmohan Singh said the accident happened about 12.30pm. “The search and rescue operations have been initiated on war footing. Many casualties are expected. The landslide is still active which has made the operations very risky and difficult,” he said.
This landslide occurred a few weeks after a massive landslide near Batseri village of Kinnaur had killed nine people on July 25.
In Shimla, during the assembly session, chief minister Jai Ram Thakur said that he had directed police and local administration to carry out rescue operations. “NDRF has also been put on alert. We have received information that one bus and a car could have been hit. We are awaiting detailed information."
Kinnaur deputy commissioner Abid Hussain said 30 to 40 passengers were feared trapped inside the bus. He said heavy machineries are being deployed to remove the debris but it may take a little time.
