No Independence Day boycott by ULFA in Assam; says ready for discussion on `Sovereignty’

Guwahati, Aug 11 (UNI) In a significant change of stance, banned militant outfit United Liberation
Front of Asom (ULFA) for the first time has not called for an Independence Day boycott in Assam
for the last 40 years.
In a first in over 40 years, the ULFA-I has decided not to boycott or call for any bandh on the Independence Day, a statement from the outfit said.
For nearly the last two decades, the insurgent outfit carried out many subversive activities in
the run up to Independence Day.
The outfit, however, raised an objection to the celebration of Independence Day in Assam,
saying that the state was “never a part of colonial India”.
ULFA-I stated that it is ready for discussion on Assam’s sovereignty with the government of
India, by putting forth “historical facts” and in line with the objective of the outfit.
The ULFA-I further demanded the Government of India to bring in a constitutional amendment,
which will pave the way for discussions.
