Foodies have been left divided after a mum revealed she freezes her avocados so she always has a perfectly ripe stash on hand. 

The Australian mum buys a haul of the fruit when the price drops, mashes it, adds some lemon juice and stores them in the freezer in small plastic cups.

'When it is defrosted it is exactly the same as when I put it in the freezer,' she claimed.

But others were not so sure about her 'game changing' hack with many arguing it 'definitely doesn't taste the same once frozen'.

'We tried this and it was gross when it defrosted, it was gritty and just didn't taste right at all,' one woman said on the mum's post.

Another woman said made four-kilos of frozen avocado after seeing the hack on TikTok, only to throw it out because she didn't like the texture.

'They came out icy, soggy, brown and disgusting once they thawed. I wouldn't recommend it at all,' she said before recommending people try with one avocado instead of a large batch. 

But others were on board with the idea, even giving the mum tips on how to freeze it more efficiently using ziplock bags instead of containers which take up more space.

Others agreed using frozen avocado is great for some things, like smoothies or salad dressings but not as good for sandwiches.

How can I freeze and thaw avocado? 

1 - Pick a ripe avocado that hasn't become soft yet

2 - Open the avocado and remove the seed.

To freeze slices

3 - Cut the avocado into desired size, bearing in mind it will get softer as it thaws

4 - Spray the avocado slices with lemon juice

5 - Place on grease-proof paper in the freezer for an hour or until firm

6 - Remove from tray and place in a zip lock bag or airtight container 

To freeze mashed avocado 

3 - Remove the skin and place the avocado in a bowl

4 - Add lemon juice. Juice from a quarter of a lemon should be enough for one medium avocado

5 - Mash to desired consistency

6 - Put one serve of the mash into each container

To thaw

Take the slices or mash from the freezer and place in the fridge for 30 minutes

A home cook's post about freezing avocados went viral in May the woman simply used a cookie scoop to make dozens of avocado balls from her ripe fruit.

She then put them on a baking tray in the freezer 'for a few hours' until they were hard.

Then she moved them into a zip lock bag where she could use them at will.

In other recipes the avocado is coated in lemon juice or mashed with it in order to keep the avocado from spoiling when thawed.

All of the recipes call for ripe avocados that are 'just soft' as they 'tend to get even softer' once thawed.

Avocados can be frozen for up to six months, according to the home cooks.

The fruit can be frozen in slices, mashed, or whole according to the home cooks.

One woman said it is important to 'add a tiny bit of lemon juice' to mashed and sliced avocado so they don't go brown when thawing.

'This is amazing, thankyou I have had so many issues trying to freeze vegetables,' one woman said.
