NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday reiterated that it had not taken any decision yet to prepare a National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) at the national level. Replicating the NRC exercise, already done for Assam, for other parts of the country in a phased manner was promised by BJP in its election manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. After the December 2019 passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAA), after another BJP manifesto promise, there was speculation that an all-India NRIC too was on the cards.. However, minister of state for home Nityanand Rai has, while replying to a written question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, clarified: "Till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare National Register of Indian Citizens at the national level".
