The last seven days in motorsport continued the action-packed moments from the week before. This time it came from a thrilling Styrian Grand Prix in MotoGP, followed by a MotoGP legend announcing his retirement from the sport. Also, the third round of the 2021 DTM season took place at Zolder, with Mitch Evans completing another piece of the 2021/22 Formule E driver market puzzle. Here’s all about it:
MotoGP
The first of MotoGP’s double-header races at the Red Bull Ring in Austria saw history being made. Jorge Martin scored a sensational maiden win for himself and Pramac Ducati in just his sixth race in the premier class. Following him in second place was 2020 world champion Joan Mir for Suzuki, with championship leader and Yamaha main man Fabio Quartararo further stamping on his lead at the riders’ standings by finishing third. This result leaves Quartararo a good 40 points clear of Pramac Ducati’s Johann Zarco with just eight races left in the 2021 season.
Off-track, the eventual decision has officially happened. Valentino Rossi has announced that he will be hanging up his MotoGP boots after the 2021 season. The nine-time World Champion has had an illustrious career spanning 26 seasons, with the Italian scoring 115 grand prix victories from 414 starts so far. While Rossi’s final season has been a struggle, he’ll be hoping to sign off his MotoGP career in style in the eight races left this season.
DTM
Arjun Maini returned to racing action at Round 3 of the 2021 DTM season at Zolder, Belgium. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on the GetSpeed Mercedes driver’s side the entire weekend after qualifying 15th for Race 1, and then being eliminated from the race after a tangle on the opening lap. What’s more, the car was too damaged to make it to the grid for the final race of the weekend. The Indian driver will be hoping to bounce back at the Nurburgring, Germany for the fourth round of the season scheduled for August 21, 2021.
Formula E
Just a week after Robert Frijns announced his renewed contract with Envision Virgin Racing, Mitch Evans has re-signed with Jaguar Racing with a multi-year deal. The two-time Formula E race winner has been with the squad since the 2016-17 season, with the Kiwi now staying put till the Gen 3 era that will kick off during the 2022-23 season.
Next week will see MotoGP return to the Red Bull Ring to complete its double header, with the seventh round of the 2021 World Rally Championship commencing at Belgium. The 2020/21 Formula E season will also reach its conclusion with double headers in Berlin.
