Even in the exalted group that is Lamborghini supercars, the Countach stands out. If the Miura announced Ferruccio's eponymous company to the world, the Countach assured it legendary status. It is, for many, still peak supercar: fast, loud, occasionally difficult, and always exhilarating. So, really, it should probably come as no surprise that Lamborghini has announced a return for the Countach.
It's the first time Lambo has embraced a full reimagination; there was a 21st century Miura 15 years ago, marking 40 years of that car, but it never made production. The implication with this latest tease is that a Countach will happen again within the decade.
Details are scarce for the moment; Lamborghini has tweeted a video with evocative lines like "the rebirth of a dream" and "a new image ready to be hung on a wall." The image that's been posted on Instagram shows a covered car that clearly evokes the Countach wedge, albeit an early spoiler-free model rather than the later, wilder, Wolf-Of-Wall-Street style. The caption, sadly, talks more of the original than what to expect of the new Countach.
Time for some educated guesses, then. A rebodied FKP 37 Sian is being suggested for that moment, using the 6.5-litre V12 with supercapacitor assistance; after all, it would be a surprise for Lamborghini to have invested in the tech to apply it to just 82 cars. It seems very unlikely that a new Countach could use anything less than 12 cylinders, which rules out both the Huracan's V10 and the Urus V8, and with the final edition of the Aventador already confirmed, it would seem a tad strange to lumber the rebirth of such an icon with 10-year-old technology. Or perhaps this is the beginning of the electrified future? Lamborghini speaks of how the original Countach represented "a dream to create a Super Sports Car like no other." A plug-in Lamborghini would surely do that in 2021.
It's hard not to clutch at straws for the moment, such is the dearth of officially available information. The important news, however, is that the Lamborghini Countach is returning. Could make for quite the reveal at Pebble Beach, also known as supercar central for the month of August. Watch this space...
