Opposition stages walkout on police atrocities against tribal in Attappady

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 (UNI) Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) on Tuesday staged a walkout from Kerala Assembly in protest against denial of an adjournment motion on police atrocities against tribals in Attappady.
Seeking the leave of the House to move an adjournment motion on police high-handedness against tribals, Muslim League MLA N Shamsudheen said a huge police force barged into the Vattakkolly tribal settlement in Attappady in the wee hours of August 9 and committed violence.
Vice-chairman of Adivasi Action Committee Murugan, his wife Rajamani and Murugan's father Choriya Mooppan were dragged out of their house. Murugan's child Rajiv and several women were also roughed up by the police.
Murugan, fighting the land mafia in the area has been attacked by the police on the behest of local CPI(M) leaders, he said.
In his reply, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Murugan and his father failed to appear before the police in connection with a complaint filed by a person.
Meanwhile, Rajamani filed a complaint against the person who allegedly pelted stones on her after she allowed her cow to graze on his property.
When a police team reached the area to arrest two tribals, five policemen including a woman were injured in a scuffle. The Chief Minister also clarified that strict action will be taken against those involved in the crime.
Following this, Speaker MB Rajesh denied permission to move the adjournment motion leading to the protest by the Opposition members.
Later, the Opposition members, alleging that Kerala is the 7th state in the country for the most number of attacks against tribals and backward classes, staged the walkout from the House.
