MLA Ranjit slams Govt over fertiliser shortage

Imphal, August 09 2021: Taking serious note of the government's failure to deliver fertiliser to the farmers on time, Congress MLA K Ranjit has accused the government of ignoring plight and importance of the food producers.

The MLA on Monday handed over Rs 3 lakh to the Covid Task Force of Sugnu assembly constituency, which has been running several Community Home Isolation Centres (CHICs).

The MLA has been providing free meals to the inmates of these CHICs as well.

Interacting with the media on the occasion, MLA Ranjit said that farmers of his constituency are being forced to travel for 30 km to get their share of urea amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Considering the hardships faced by the farmers, he discussed the matter with agriculture department and acquired 4500 bags of urea for his constituency for the first phase and the same were distributed to the farmers.

Unfortunately, some individuals are trying to paint political colour to the initiative, which he took up for the sake of the farmers without any political motive, Ranjit said.

There are media reports of fertiliser shortage with farmers even launching hunger strike, which is a serious issue, MLA Ranjit said, while asking the agriculture minister whether he will be able to distribute urea further after the first phase distribution.

He had enquired the same with the chief minister in a letter but has not received any response.

Farmers are already facing the issue of rainfall deficit and they are spending their hard earned money to irrigate their farmlands.

Amid such situation, the farmers are facing unavailability of fertilisers, he said and urged the department officials to bring the fertiliser to the farmers at their respective localities.

Regarding the 4500 bags of urea, which he brought from the agriculture office for his constituency, MLA Ranjit said that he had distributed the urea through the development committee and Covid Task Force of his constituency.

The team distributed 700 bags in Sugnu area, 600 bags in Serou, 450 bags in Tangjeng Khunou, Tangjeng Khunjao, Mangjing, Korsantabi areas, 600 bags in Chairel GP, 700 bags in Wangoo GP, 200 bags in Wangoo Mamang Sabal, Nongyaikhong, 100 bags in Waikhong and 700 bags in Kakching Khunou areas, the MLA said.
