Odisha college reopening: Thin attendance on day one

Like other technical colleges of the state, the College of Engineering and Technology (CET) Bhubaneswar, which will be upgraded into a non-affiliating unitary university soon, welcomed its students to the campus by following the Covid guidelines issued by the government.
“Final year undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students attended classes by wearing masks. But the number of students was very less on the first day. We expect the number will increase after three or four days,” said Prashant Kumar Patra, principal of CET.
Institute of Management and Information Technology (IMIT), Cuttack, principal PK Padhi said students did not attend classes on Monday. “Final year students are appearing for online examinations, that’s why they did not come to the college,” he added.
Odisha Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) honorary secretary Binod Dash said most of the engineering and professional colleges received a very few numbers of students on the first day of reopening. “Many of them are busy preparing projects and appearing for online examinations,” he added.
Ritesh Chhatoi, a final year BTech student of a city-based engineering college, said he feels happy after attending college. “It is not easy to stay at home for several months. Practical classes are very important for us and they cannot be conducted online, so reopening of colleges is a good idea,” he added.
Jeetamitra Satpathy, principal of Government ITI Bhubaneswar, said around 40 per cent of students attended the physical classes on Monday. “Students attended practical classes along with theory classes. They were looking happy to attend offline classes,” she added.
Bansidhar Majhi, the vice-chancellor of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, said they will start offline classes for final year students and Ph.D. scholars from August 13.
The skill development and technical education department had taken a decision to reopen the educational institution under its administrative control for the final year students from August 9. The institutions were asked to take all precautionary measures like complete sanitization and disinfection of classrooms, laboratories, and hostels according to the Covid-19 guidelines.
