This replica German castle hides a magnificent modern home – complete with a lavish indoor swimming pool, 'floating' walkways, a 10-seater cinema and ornate turrets with rooftop terraces

A replica of a medieval German castle tucked away on an Australian hillside has been described as one of the country's most unique homes. Built in the late 1970s by a West German engineer who moved Down Under after winning the lottery, Chateau Avalon in Aldgate, north-east of Adelaide, strikes the perfect balance between old-world charm and modern luxury.

Home to South Australian winemaker Warren Randall for the past decade, the sandstone house - which is a replica of a castle from the Rheingau district, a popular wine region in Germany 's west - contains a lavish indoor swimming pool, 'floating' walkways, a 10-seater cinema, and turreted towers with rooftop terraces.

The entranceway looks like a scene from a Harry Potter movie set, with its jewel colored carpets, mahogany paneled walls, and an imposing spiral staircase that winds its way to the first of two upstairs floors.

Standout features include a luxury chef's kitchen, a basement bar, sprawling circular living rooms and five bedrooms with curved walls, floor-to-ceiling windows and built-in four-poster beds.

There are six bathrooms, including a master with a large spa tub and elegant tiles that make a mural on the wall.

On the first floor is a luxury chef's kitchen with a marble island and rounded walls just like every other room.

The castle also boasts a 10-seater home cinema.

After it was sold by its lottery-winning builder, the property was owned by another German family before it was purchased by an 'American heiress' and later by Mr Randall in 2010, according to realestate.com.au. Elsewhere on the estate is a raised vegetable patch, a pine forest and a Japanese garden filled with more than 400 roses.

A stained glass dome painted with bright flowers is the crowning glory of the castle, which has changed hands six times since it was built more than 40 years ago.

The castle recently hit the market via an expressions of interest campaign, with final bids accepted on Monday, August 30. Listing agent Stephanie Williams of Williams Luxury Real Estate describes it as 'breathtaking' and 'unsurpassed' in terms of elegance and uniqueness in the area.
