The Bombay High Court on August 10 scrapped the requirement of holding a Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to Class XI (junior college). The court said that students should be admitted on the basis of the Class X marks and internal assessments.

The Maharashtra government had earlier decided to hold a CET examination based on the state board syllabus for Class XI admissions. This exam was scheduled to be held on August 21.

Considering the COVID-19 situation, the Bombay HC bench said that if CET is allowed to be held then a large number of students will be exposed to the risks and this could have a 'cascading effect'.

The division bench of Justices RD Dhanuka and RI Chagla also said that the state does not have the power to issue such a notification and added that the court has the right to intervene in such cases.
