Samsung has officially announced Exynos W920 as its newest chipset meant for wearable devices. It will debut with the Galaxy Watch 4 that will launch tomorrow. It comes with a number of upgrades over predecessor wearable processors, especially in terms of performance.
The first thing to note about the Exynos W920 chipset is that it is based on the 5nm EUV process. It is a dual-core processor featuring two ARM Cortex-A55 high-performance cores and ARM Mali-G68 GPU. Samsung is claiming about 20% performance improvement and around 10X better graphics performance with the new chipset. It is further capable of supporting display panels up to 960 x 540 pixels aka qHD resolution.
The team has made use of Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging (FO-PLP) technology. This tech is said to "incorporates the Exynos W920, power management IC (PMIC), LPDDR4, and embedded multimedia card (eMMC) in the same package using System-in-Package-embedded Package on Package (SiP-ePoP) configuration." In other words, this ensures that the chipset comes in a small size despite offering all performance advancements.
It features a 4G LTE Cat.4 modem for offering on-the-go internet connectivity. There is also Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 that will users who indulge in outdoor activities like running, walking, and cycling. Since the Galaxy Watch 4 is just a few hours away, we should hear a little more about the chipset capabilities at the same event.
