Possible cholera outbreak in Ahmedabad

A significant rise in waterborne diseases was registered in Ahmedabad city, indicating a worrisome deterioration in the quality of drinking water. Between January 1 and August 7, as many as 59 cases of cholera were reported.

Cholera has made India suffer many times in the past but a emerging cases of cholera in Ahmedabad city has raised concern over the issue.

A significant rise in waterborne diseases was registered in Ahmedabad city, indicating a worrisome deterioration in the quality of drinking water. Between January 1 and August 7, as many as 59 cases of cholera were reported.

While no cholera cases were registered in the past year, most of the cases this year were found in the eastern area of the city including Lambha, Maninagar, and Behrampura. 

Out of the 59 cholera cases, 24 were found in Lambha, while 12 cases were found from Maninagar, seven in Behrampura, and 5 cases in Vatva as per data from the AMC health department.

Danilimda reported three cholera cases while two each were registered in the wards Amraiwadi and Ramol-Hathijan. One case each was found in Vasna, Sabarmati, Isanpur, and Bhaipura-Hatkeshwar. Gandhinagar, within a 2 km radius area in Kalol, was declared `cholera-hit` on July 6 after five cholera cases were found there. 

As per data from the AMC, other waterborne diseases also showed a significant increase this year. 629 cases of jaundice were reported between January 1 and August 7, 2021, and 1,035 typhoid and 2,076 diarrhoea cases were reported in the same period.

In the entirety of 2020, 1,338 and 2,072 cases for each disease respectively were reported in the area.
