Thane, Aug 10 (UNI) A mega 'Mashal (torch) morcha' was organized to press for demand of naming the airport at Navi Mumbai after the local leader D B Patil, who fought for the rights of the project-affected people (PAPs).
The morcha started from Jasai village and went through different places in Navi Mumbai on Monday. It began after the leaders garlanded the life-size statue of Patil.
Thousands participated in the morcha as it moved from one village to another with different leaders leading it.
This was done to garner support and make the citizens aware of their demand, which is pending with the government since long.
The 'mashal' was lit by Dashrath Patil, who is the president of the Agitation Committee.
Past and present MPs and MLAs from different districts, besides a number of PAPs, participated in this morcha.
The protests are being held in Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts in favour of their demand.
Mr Patil declared that their next step will be to stop ongoing work at the airport from August 16, as the deadline ends on that day.
The government is in no no mood to listen to our genuine demands he said.
