Gurgaon: A 17-year-old girl who had allegedly been harassed for months and recently threatened with kidnapping by a local youth pressuring her to marry him was found dead in her house in Pataudi on Sunday night. The girl had hanged herself from the ceiling fan of a first-floor room.
In his police complaint, her father has alleged she was hounded by Rohit constantly – on the phone, on the roads, on her way to school, and that Rohit had also threatened to “defame” her younger sister if she did not yield to his proposal.
A case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC was registered at Pataudi police station against Rohit on Monday. No arrests have been made so far.
The girl had recently cleared her Class XII board exam and was preparing for college admission. She was the eldest of three siblings. Her father teaches at a private school.
The father said in his complaint his younger daughter was also present when Rohit had recently intercepted them on their way to school. A few days ago, the 17-year-old had told her father about the harassment and calls from Rohit allegedly threatening her. The father claimed he had confronted Rohit over the phone, but it had failed to deter him.
“My younger daughter informed me that Rohit was harassing my older daughter. On June 7, one of her cousins called Rohit’s mother and requested her to tell her son not to harass my daughter. She had assured that her son will stop following my daughter,” the father alleged.
The stalking, however, didn’t stop. The malice grew as the 17-year-old continued to rebuff him – Rohit allegedly resorted to regular threats. Once one occasion, he stopped her near a local market and threatened to kidnap her if she refused to talk to him. Rohit also allegedly threatened to defame her younger sister and harm her family members. “Rohit had threatened to kidnap her in the presence of her younger sister and also threaten to defame my other daughters,” the father said.
On August 7, Rohit allegedly called her and insisted that she elope with him. The 17-year-old informed her father about the call, following which he called Rohit and threatened to file a police complaint if he continued to harass his daughter. “Under these circumstances, she committed suicide,” the father said in his complaint.
On Sunday, the police control room received a call around 9pm about the suicide and a team from Pataudi police station was sent to the house. “The girl hanged herself from the ceiling fan with the help of a dupatta. No suicide note found,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken.
