The Indian government will explore the possibility of setting up a mega textile cluster in Ponduru in Andhra Pradesh’s (AP) in Srikakulam district and talks will be held with the textiles minister for further course of action, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said last week. She urged district officials to raise the number of artisans in and around Ponduru area to set up such a cluster.
The minister said this while visiting the Andhra Fine Khadi Karmikabhivrudhi Sangam (AFKKS) at Ponduru on the eve of the National Handloom Day to lay the foundation stone for a khadi work shed there.
Andhra Pradesh state’s deputy chief minister Dharmana Krishana Das and finance minister B Rajendranath Reddy were also present.
Sitharaman interacted with artisans about the present state of production, challenges, market potential and marketing strategies and participated in the National Handloom Day celebrations organised at the Ponduru market yard, according to media reports from the state.
